Wrestling is a team sport with an emphasis on individual performance. While wrestlers compete individually, the points they score by winning matches counts toward their team’s total. They will only rely on themselves while on the mat, but will learn the importance of teamwork by supporting each other.
Wrestling is built on position. A good stance is essential to almost any sport. From football to baseball to soccer, a player’s stance is similar to a good wrestling stance. Quality training for wrestling will include repeated drilling in a good stance and moving in that stance. Wrestling keeps an athlete alert to his own body position and balance, as well as that of others he comes into contact with. These skills apply well in football and in soccer, as players fight for position. Wrestling will help develop those contact positioning skills.
Unlike most sports, wrestlers compete by weight class. This will ensure that competition is fair and technical prowess will be just as important as physical ability. Any athlete can be successful at wrestling– if they put the time in to learn good technique and have a good work ethic.
